Skill Development Program

Skill Development Program, BGMEA (2012)

Joint Venture with Department of Youth Development (DYD):- BGMEA and DYD started youth training program by singing a Memorandum of Under standing in the Northern Part of Bangladesh through 2 centers at Gaibandha & Kurigram. Soon another program will be started in Rangpur so that extreme poor dwellers of greater Northern Part can easily join in the program. Till the date this project has accommodated 15 thousand people for RMG factories thus generated employment for poor marginal people.

Skill Training Program with Ministry of Education :- Two centers one in Tungipara and another one is Kotalipara that BGMEA runs with co-operation of BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology (BUFT). Successfully accomplished trainee workers are privileged with 100% guaranteed job placement through SDP cell BGMEA under this program. Tungipara & Kotalipara have produced 2000 skilled operator for the sector since 2010. Still it is running with the same spirit.

Project with Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF):- MJF is a reputed NGO working to promote Human Rights & Governance initiative in Bangladesh. BGMEA in collaboration with MJF started a training program funded by DFID in Sripur District. It is a short term program and around 500 skilled workers will be coming out from this center & will be employed as machine operator in BGMEA’s member factories.

Training for the Youth Supported by Local Government of Bangladesh :- Considering the demand of garment based job and also the desire of Local Government, BGMEA & BUFT jointly contributed machine, materials & job placement to set up 3 individual centers in Bagerhat, Faridpur & Bogura by infrastructural support of Local Government.

Collaboration Partnership with Bangladesh Ansar: – Bangladesh Ansar & BGMEA started two different centers (sweater machine & plain sewing machine operator) in Ansar Academy shafipur. A huge number of skilled workers are passing out & receiving appointment in the factories BGMEA & BUFT jointly financing the program.

Urban Partnership for Poverty Reduction Project (UPPR):- BGMEA signed a MoU with UPPR, which is a project under UNDP namely “Urban Partnership for Poverty Reduction” to mitigate a significant shortage of skilled workers or for growing demand for skilled labor & at the same time to address vision 2012 targets of poor levels. The program is financed by UKAID.

Training Program for Capacity Building for RMG Workers & Management: – A training program is in operation since 2010 financed by Ministry of Commerce for Skill Development of existing workers and midlevel management. BGMEA is playing a vital role as implementing partners while Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) is acting as monitoring and controlling authority.

BGMEA Training Center: – BGMEA has set-up a full fledged training center of 6328 sq/ft at Tongi area. The capacity of this center is 3200 trainees per year. It has an institutional set up that is- seven class rooms, administrative room, instructor’s room, instructor’s dormitory, 5 toilettes and a conference room with the capacity of 45 persons. Presently BGMEA is conducting training program with Ministry of Commerce and UPPR over there.

Skills and Training Enhancement Project: BGMEA has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Directorate of Technical Education under Ministry of Education. The objective of this project is to train man force and to turn them in to skill workforce for the RMG sector. To mitigate the remarkable shortage of skilled worker this is one of the greatest initiatives for which World Bank is financing through the Implementation Grant by International Development Association (IDA). The project is decided to produce 10,000 skilled workers at the initial stage annually.

Buyers Initiatives with BGMEA: – International Buyers are getting involved with our efforts and TESCO and DFID have started a training center for mid management to improve the production efficiency at factory level. Beside that we are working with H & M and development partner SIDA with the objective of starting 12 more centers.

Apart from all above few programs are in the pipeline. We are in process to start a training program which is designed for fresher considering the demand of interest to work in RMG sector with Ministry of Commerce. A training program for urban poor people is about to confirm with World Vision Bangladesh. Simultaneously we are participating in a discussion meeting and contributing our best to uphold scopes of RMG potentials for future employment with Ministry of Education and ADB. BGMEA will be major stakeholder here and will organize a training program which will be funded by ADB.
